Hidden amongst the bad news about Wii availability, a nugget of information about the success of motion control
At E3 Expo, Nintendo executives stated that its motion-controlled Wii consoles would remain in short supply right through the holiday season this year — a disappointing bit of news to be sure, though Nintendo execs also stated that the console ““is poised to become the No. 1 platform worldwide very soon.”
The interesting fact that came out during Nintendo’s discussions at the show was the fact that motion control is indeed bringing gaming to a broader audience than traditional consoles. Nintendo stated that in households owning a Wii, 1 in 8 men over 50 are actively gaming on the platform — which to us seems to be a pretty impressive stat.
Nintendo also discussed forthcoming Wii Fit physical fitness game and “frames” for the Wii controllers, including the Wii Zapper, which can hold the Wiimote and Nunchuck controllers in “machine gun” style for First Person Shooters, and a Wii Wheel for driving games.
The New York Times has good coverage here.
