One we wish we’d seen at CES
Novint’s new 3D touch controller, the Falcon won a CES Innovations award last week. The company had previously announced that VTech’s contract manufacturing arm will be manufacturing the device, which is designed for 3D gaming and other apps on the PC.
This controller’s been in the news for a few months now, and has gotten a fair amount of good press over its ability to not only translate 3D motion, but also to provide “rumble pack” like feedback in all three directions. This will all require some degree of software updates/rewrites on the part of game vendors — always the biggest hurdle for a smaller manufacturer like this, but the premise is sound.
Our biggest wonder about this controller is the sheer size and scale of the device (pictured below). The Wiimote has the virtue of being small, light and wireless. The Falcon looks like it needs to be tethered to a desk and it’s not exactly something you could picture being used for a frenetic first person shooter. We’ll try to get our hands on one soon to put it through it’s paces.![]()

Just to clarify a couple of points. The Falcon provides high-fidelity force feedback, which is much more sophisticated and realistic than “rumble pack” effects. Also, we are currently showing a Half-Life 2 mod to demonstrate the power of the technology for FPS games, and games in general. Of course, feeling is believing. We invite you to try the Falcon and evaluate it for yourself.

With the gaming industry moving further toward “interactive” controls and sensations, and with a warm welcome from gamers. I believe that more and more interactive/sensation devices will start to dominate the gaming scene. I just hope awards judges like the CES panel start to realize this.
